Ex-Barcelona star Pedro Rodríguez retires from football

Former Barcelona and Chelsea forward Pedro Rodríguez has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a decorated career that saw him win major honours at club and international level.

The Spanish footballer announced his decision in an emotional statement shared on his X account on Wednesday, saying he felt the time had come to begin a new chapter in his life.

“I feel that the time has come. The time to take a step forward and begin a new stage in my life,” Pedro said.

Reflecting on his career, the 39-year-old expressed pride in fulfilling his childhood dream and thanked the people who supported him throughout his journey.

“I leave proud of having lived my dream and of all the people who were by my side to make it come true,” he added.

Pedro also expressed gratitude to football for the happiness and memories it gave him throughout his career.

“Thank you, soccer, for making me so happy,” he said.

Pedro began his senior career at Barcelona, where he became an important part of the club’s successful side under former manager Pep Guardiola. He won several domestic and European trophies with the Catalan giants before joining Chelsea in 2015.

He later continued his career in Italy, representing Roma and Lazio.

At international level, Pedro was part of Spain’s golden generation and helped La Roja win the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012.

His retirement brings an end to a career spanning more than 15 years, during which he established himself as one of Spain’s most decorated footballers of his generation.
